Lol So these are my old life drawing stuff
I used to do a whole bunch of these scribbly gestures, pretty much what Werner tells us to do now. And this was when i was in the workshop. It seems like a pretty pointless study but it actually helps in the long run. I still do this to warm up.

old gestures. I just used to work inside out and include shapes. So my main focus was getting the rhythm of the pose in my gestures rather than focusing on outlines.
These bottom two life drawings were like 1 hr studies and this was before the workshop during art fundies. During this time i just knew how to draw what i could see but i couldn't imagine the actual person in 3d and i didnt know much about bones either. So the only thing i knew was to draw details and draw line for line.
And this is my ancient device i used to train my eye which i was doing during the workshop. Apparently the old life drawing masters used this also. I used this tool to help block out positive and negative shapes and to see things in proportion. Its about the size of my palm and a bit bigger. Oh and the way you use this device is by holding it straight with one arm and closing one eye and only using the other eye to see through it and look at the figure. Its used for only long studies 10mins to 1hr or longer. I found it quite frustrating at first but after seeing the results i think it was quite worth it and didn't hesitate to use it again and again even thou i would get weird looks from other people during life drawing sessions.
So pretty much i drew grids on my life drawing pads about the same ratio as my device.. and i drew the figure using shapes only. Then on another layer i would draw out the contour lines around the shape and trying to feel out the form as i draw the contour. It wasn't just plainly outlining ...it had to be selective lines. I did studies previously of a old life drawing master to help me study selective lines and line quality.
So overall i did quite a lot of studies to get where i am at now eh..i still have most of my old life drawings, its not the prettiest thing but i always go back and look at em to remind of myself how far i have come along. I did a bunch of other studies like negative space drawings, blind contour or even 10 second gestures or less.
